Botox Jaw Reduction in Singapore. Is it suitable for everyone?

Just when you thought Botox Jaw can give you the desired face slimming effect and V-shape face, upon multiple shots, you fail to see the results and can’t help but wonder “What’s wrong?”

Some people may consider a square jaw to look too masculine, and seek ways to reduce square jaws to obtain the desired V-Shape face. Bulky masseter muscles can contribute to this square jaw appearance. This is common in Asians, younger ladies or males. Botox jaw reduction usually works best in this case.

Another common group who feel that their face is too round or seems bulky on the lower face is usually in the middle to older age group. As we age, our skin starts to sag and the original V-Shaped face (upside down triangle) becomes a squarish (upright triangle) shaped face.

botox jaw reduction

In this case, the best treatment would include face lifting, such as with HIFU or face threadlift treatments. Botox jaw reduction treatments will not help to improve this condition.

Botox jaw reduction may not be the answer to everything.

First things first, what’s the make up of the round/square jaw that we do not seem to love?

There are 4 reasons for a square jaw appearance:

  • Bone Structure
Buccal Fat
  • Sagging jowls
  • Masseter muscle

Let’s go into each one of them on a deeper layer:

1) Bone Structure –

The size of the lower jaw bone (mandible or jawbone) is wide and may cause a square-looking face. No amount of botox jaw reduction will help in this case, unless it is coupled together with bulky heavy masseter muscles. Even then, the botox jaw reduction treatment will only target the muscle and square jaw reduction is limited by the bone structure.

There is only one way to obtain a slim V-shape face from this, and it will be through surgery. There are two types of surgery, and they are called T-osteotomy and V-osteotomy.

2) Buccal Fat

You get the idea.

Buccal fat, also typically known as “baby fat” or “chipmunk cheeks”, can be the cause for round or wide looking square jaws. Buccal fat is usually resistant to exercise and diet, and is one of the last areas for the volume of fat to decrease in weight loss. Many complain that the fullness of lower anterior cheeks never seem to go away, even in people with low body fat content (such as gym trainers).

As such the way to overcome this can be through HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound), which uses the energy to tighten and lift the skin. At the same time, the fat layer is also targeted, thus resulting in a more defined jaw line.

Another treatment method will be with the face threadlift, which uses PDO (polydioxanone) threads, inserted just beneath the skin, to effectively tighten and lift the skin. This tightening of the face can lift the buccal fat upwards, reducing the appearance of wide-looking jaw. It is also noted in some cases that the PDO face threads inserted can lead to some extent of lipolysis (breakdown of fats).

As the botox jaw reduction treatment only targets the muscle and not the fats, slimming of the face may not be optimal.

3) Sagging jowls

Sagging jowls is one of the most common problem seen as we age. This can be enhanced in individuals who:

  1. already have a certain extent of sagging skin

2. have the botox jaw procedure performed

With excessive botox jaw reduction treatments, individuals with already slightly sagging skin can develop jowling. This happens when the botox jaw reduction treatment causes the masseter muscle to shrink beyond the point of giving enough volume to the face, causing it to have a flap of “excess skin” at the sides of the mouth. Hence, it is very important to seek a certified medical practitioner to perform the treatment. In cases with a large masseter (jaw muscles) and sagging skin, giving botox jaw reduction treatment in appropriate dosage, can help in face slimming and yet prevent excessive jowling.

Individuals with sagging skin can benefit from skin tightening procedures coupled together with botox jaw reduction treatments. Skin t

ightening procedures include HIFU, Face threadlift or even with fillers for lifting.

4) Masseter Muscle

Upon overworking of the masseter muscle (through excessive chewing, clenching and grinding of teeth, the muscles can become enlarged, giving a more angular face shape.

This is when Botox jaw reduction treatment comes into place. Botox jaw reduction treatments target the masseter area and works as a “muscle relaxer.” It prevents the muscle from working too much, which as a result, shrinks the jaw muscles. As such, visible results from the botox jaw reduction treatment can be seen roughly 3-4 weeks after botox jaw injection.

Therefore, multiple injections of botox jaw reduction treatments does not necessarily result in a V-shape face. Do check with your health practitioner to assess the reason behind your round/wide-looking jawline before proceeding to the relevant treatment.

Botulinum Toxin IMSA Masterclass

Early Sunday morning at the IMSA Botulinum Toxin Masterclass, exploring the latest advancements in the placement of toxins and refreshing previous techniques.

image2 (1).jpeg

Botulinum toxin can do quite a number of things when it comes to anti-aging. Besides reducing fine lines such as crows feet, frown lines and forehead lines, it can also help in facial contouring (such as jaw reduction) and opening up the eyes.

Active and Static Lines

Fine lines can be grouped into active lines and static lines. Active lines are those that form when we use that particular muscle group such as crows feet when we smile,

frown lines when we frown

image1 (6)

or forehead lines when we look up.

botox wrinkles

Over time, repetitive actions over these areas gradually create deepening of the skin which form static lines. Static lines are lines that appear permanently on the skin even though our muscles are at rest and we are not creating any expressions. Some of these permanent lines, especially those at the glabella region ( frown lines), may make us look angry and unapproachable all the time.

image1 (4).jpeg

The red dots represent points where we would like to inject to reduce muscle activity in order to reduce frown lines.

What can we do to look less angry and to reduce these lines?

The use of botulinum toxin can help to relax these muscles and reduce the lines. For those with deep static lines, a touch of filler can help to level up the deep creases.

What brands of botulinum toxin are available in clinics?

The 3 brands that can be found in clinics in Singapore are Botox, Dysport and Xeomin.

Where else can we use botulinum toxin?

Besides its use on facial muscles, botulinum toxin can also be used on the body. This includes injection of the toxin into the calf muscles to reduce the size and also botulinum toxin injection into the palms or underarms to reduce hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating.

Nose Threadlift | Nose Filler – Kellyn Shiau

Can we combine Nose Threadlift with Nose Fillers? Absolutely.

This usually depends on the existing nose structure. For those with very flat noses, a touch of nose filler, together with nose threadlift, can produce a synergistic effect to give a really good lift. Long gone are the days where people try to load up as much filler as possible on the nose bridge to make it higher and higher, only to realise 2-3 months later that they’re left with a really thick nose bridge.

I’ve had many people ask me how this is done, so here you go! An educational post 🙂

*do not try this at home

Materials needed:

Nose Filler:                                                                         Nose Threadlift Threads:

image1 (6)

After some topical numbing cream, we are ready to start with our Nose Filler! Our nose fillers contain lidocaine ( a numbing agent) so the process is made more comfortable.

  1. The nose filler is usually deposited in small tiny injections into the nose bridge and tip

image3 2

2. Once that’s done, a slight touch of a little bit more local anesthesia to make the nose threadlift even more comfortable.

3. Next up, the HIKO Nose Threadlift.

A little entry point is created at the tip of the nose. The same entry point will be used for both the placement of the nose bridge and tip threads for the nose threadlift.

If you look closely at the nose thread photo above, you can see little cogs on the sides of the thread. This helps to lift and firm up the nose. More details about the Nose Threadlift can be found in my previous blog post.

Nose Threadlift                                                                                         Nose Threadlift

The number of nose threads inserted for the nose threadlift depends on the nose, the type of threads used and one’s desired nose height and shape.

Nose Threadlift. All done!

Is the nose threadlift painful?

The nose threadlift procedure is made more comfortable with local anesthesia with most having no problems at all once numbing has taken effect.

What is it like after the nose threadlift procedure?

As the procedure is minimally invasive, one will be able to resume their daily activities immediately after the nose threadlift. A small handful may experience some slight swelling or bruising. Immediately after the nose threadlift procedure, the lift will typically look higher than the final result due to very slight swelling. A reduction of 10-15% within the following 1-2 weeks will leave you with the final nose threadlift result.

image2 (2)IMG_5883

Benefits of Nose Threadlift include:

  • Slimmer nose bridge
  • Higher nose bridge
  • Better definition
  • Smaller nose tip
  • Lifted nose tip
  • Straighter Nose

How long does the nose threadlift last?

The nose threadlift typically lasts 1-2 years. A slight top up at 9-12 months can help to prolong the effects of the nose threadlift.

With the combination of the nose fillers and nose threadlift, one can achieve a more desired nose shape and height while reducing the risk of spreading or broadening compared to using nose fillers alone.

Hope the above information helps! 🙂

Face Threadlift | Nose Threadlift APEM Singapore

Face thread lifts are fast replacing surgical face lifts. With effective results and a way shorter ( sometimes even zero) downtime, more are opting for the minimally invasive face thread lift.

Attended the 1st Asia PDO threads experts meeting (APEM) held in Singapore over the weekend.

The design and technique of thread placement in order to attain optimal results vary between individuals. Thus, it is important to have an experienced physician who is able to select the best type of threads and design a thread lift that best suits your needs to achieve maximal results.

So which are the areas that can be treated with the face thread lift?

Chin Fillers For Your Chin, What Can Dermal Fillers Do For You

Happened to chance upon this brochure by Allergan the other day on chin fillers. I thought it was rather nicely done, with the proportions of an ideal chin put across quite easily for most to understand at a glance.

Pardon the poor quality of the photo. I just snapped a photo of the brochure with my Iphone. Will upload one with better quality once I get my hands on them.

image1 (14)

So first up, the 1/3 rule. This is displayed clearly with the picture of the beautiful lady on the left.  Maintaining your face in 1/3 proportions, apparently, enhances one’s aesthetic appeal. Referring to part (d), the 1/3 should be measured from the base of the nose to the apex of the chin. Unfortunately, many asians naturally have a very short chin, thus leaving us with a less than 1/3 proportion from the nose down. For patients with a short chin, this is easily enhanced with the addition of chin fillers. Chin fillers when injected at the apex (c), lengthens the chin and enhances the lower 1/3 of one’s face. This also helps in creating the popular “V-Shaped” face.

The second part: frontal projection.

It’s easy to check if your chin measures up proportionately. Take a pen, or anything straight. Align it to your nose and chin as shown in the picture on the right (( e) red arrow). Does the pen touch the tip of your nose, lower lip and chin nicely? If it does not, chin fillers when injected in the area (f) can fill out and bring the chin forward, creating more projection. A stronger chin will make the face look more proportionate and beautiful.

Short or recessed chins can easily be treated with Chin fillers. Chin fillers help to enhance the beauty proportion of a chin without having to undergo plastic surgery. The chin filler enhancement is easily done within 10-15 mins and is a simple procedure with zero downtime! 🙂

V Shape Face Slimming

What is the difference between a young VS a matured face?

The inverted triangle vs the upright triangle.

Creating a V shaped face helps in maintaining the inverted triangle, protecting the symbol of youth. A slimmer lower face also creates a more attractive and ideal oval face shape. This is easily achieved with a few simple procedures.

There are two main ways to create or maintain a V shape face:

  1. Jaw reduction and chin enhancement ( Jaw Botox, Chin Fillers)
  2. Lower face lifting ( Thermage, HIFU, Thread lift)

How do we create a V-shape face?

For younger patients with less lower face sagging, the V shape face can be easily created by slimming the jaws with jaw botox and enhancing the chin with chin fillers.

Jaw reduction: Surgical vs non-surgical

There are several jaw reduction techniques available. A proper assessment by the doctor will be able to determine if the square jaws are due to the jaw bone or the masseter ( jaw muscles). For square jaws due to bulky masseters, a simple Jaw Botox procedure will be able to reduce and slim the jaw muscles. This is a safe, quick and easy procedure with no downtime. Surgical jaw reduction of the bone, on the other hand, involves an invasive procedure with significant risks and downtime. Fortunately, for a large group of Asians, the square jaws are usually caused by a genetic predisposition for bulky masseters. Large masseters can also be the cause of teeth grinding. This is easily treated with jaw botox.

Chin Fillers

Altering the contours of the chin with Chin Fillers can further enhance the V shape face and provide the optical illusion of a slimmer face. Improving the proportion of the chin to the face also enhances beauty and provides natural balance.

How is it done?

Jaw Botox is a simple procedure that involves 1-3 injection sites per masseter with almost zero downtime. Results can be seen in 2-4 weeks. Chin Fillers are injected directly to the site and immediate results can be seen. The combined procedure takes approximately 10-15 mins to perform.

Am I too young for the procedure?

Face shape contouring is one of the most popular procedures done in my clinic for the younger age group. Most of those who seek the V face treatment ( Jaw Botox and Chin Fillers) are in their twenties to forties.

How long does it last?

Depending on patient factors, Jaw Botox can last between 4-6 months. The type of filler used determines roughly how long the Chin Filler can last.  Chin Fillers can last anywhere between 6 months to a few years. (I will elaborate more on the different type of fillers available in another post 🙂

Are there any side effects?

Major side effects are rare. Some of the minor side effects from Jaw Botox include muscle weakness and smile asymmetry. Fortunately, these effects are not permanent and will wear out over a few weeks. Minor bruising or swelling can occur with Chin Fillers.

I will elaborate more on further enhancing the V shape face through lower face lifting methods in my next post!

Nose Threadlift in Singapore. Non- surgical Nose lift. What it can do for you

The nose threadlift is fast becoming one of the most popular methods for nose augmentation. It promises to give a higher, straighter nose bridge and tip and creates well-defined nose contours. The nose threadlift adds to the aesthetic appearance of the face by creating a more 3D effect. In addition, the nose threadlift is able to lift and reduce the nose tip for a sharper and more slender look. This, cannot be created by nose fillers.

How does it work?

image2 image1-2.PNG

*enlarge to see the cogs on the thread

The nose threadlift procedure involves the insertion of PDO (polydioxanone) threads. A very special HIKO nose thread is used for this procedure. HIKO nose threadlift threads are thicker and lined with cogs. This provides better support and structure to the nose once inserted. The result can be seen immediately as the HIKO threads provide scaffolding for support. As the threads dissolve, collagen fibers are laid down in the nose, further prolonging the effects of the nose thread lift.

How long does it last?

The nose threadlift typically lasts 1-2 years. It is semi permanent as it leaves collagen fibers that maintain the nose structure after the threads have dissolved.

How is it performed?

Numbing cream is applied to the skin for 20-30mins. This is followed by small tiny injections of local anesthesia to the nose bridge and tip to make the nose threadlift procedure more comfortable.

An opening is created at the nose tip for the insertion of the nose threadlift threads. This will be the only entry point for both the bridge and tip nose threads. The number of nose threadlift threads required vary from patient to patient and it is usually determined by the doctor after consultation. The entire nose threadlift procedure takes only about 10-15 mins.

Are there any side effects?

Major side effects are uncommon with this procedure. The nose threadlift procedure is safe, minimally invasive with almost zero downtime. Some of the minor side effects include swelling and bruising which will subside in a few days.

Can the nose threadlift procedure be combined with fillers?

Absolutely! Depending on the nose structure, when used synergistically, nose fillers and nose threadlift can further enhance the results to give more lift, height, structure and shape to create the perfect nose.

Korean Ultra V Face Thread Lift Master Course

Attended the Korean Face Thread Lift and Nose Thread Lift Master Course organised by the American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine in Singapore over the weekend. Had a great time working with the other delegates from different countries and picking up tips on the latest techniques and advancements in face thread lift and nose thread lift.image10.JPG

The course was conducted by renowned Korean Plastic Surgeon Dr Sang June Rhee

Pretty happy with the results from the Face Thread Lift!

Korean Ultra V facelift

Tired of looking at your deep nasolabial folds or jowling? Keen on taking away a few years off your appearance?

Surgical facelifts are no longer the only option for face lifting or contouring. Face thread lifts are fast becoming a popular alternative with much lesser or no downtime. Thread lifts involve the use of threads that are placed under the facial skin to tighten or firm sagging skin. They are designed to hold the skin in place and provide a supportive structure. Besides face lifting, threads can also help in contouring the face, resulting in a more V -shaped face. The effects from face thread lifts can typically last between 1-2 years!

The types of threads used in this workshop were mainly mono and cog threads. The material used to make these threads are known as PDO ( polydioxanone). PDO is a type of suture material that is fully dissolvable. It has been widely used for many years in hospitals and clinics for surgery.

What happens to the threads after they are placed in the skin?

The facelift PDO threads are usually absorbed by the skin after several months. The procedure itself however, stimulates and produces collagen up to 6 months, resulting in skin lifting/ firming that lasts up to 2 years.

What are mono threads?

Mono threads are short, smooth threads that are mostly used to tighten and reduce fine lines or wrinkling of the skin. The placement of these threads stimulates collagen production in the areas that they are placed. Improvements can be seen over the course of 1-3 months. Comparatively, they do not provide as much face lifting as the cog threads.

What are cog threads?

Cog threads are essentially mono threads with barbs. Cog threads hook underneath the facial skin to give structure and support, the tension created provides the much needed lift to sagging skin. In addition, collagen formation will also occur around the cog threads and barbs. They are the most effective in face slimming and face lifting.

What is the procedure like?

A numbing cream will be applied for about 30 mins, followed by small tiny injections of local anaesthesia to further reduce discomfort during the procedure. The threads are then inserted into the skin based on the design created by the doctor to suit each individual patient’s needs. The procedure will usually take approximately 30- 45 mins depending on the number of face threads placed.

Are there any side effects?

Major side effects are rare. Some of the minor side effects that one can expect include slight swelling, bruising, minor discomfort.

Will elaborate more on the Nose Thread Lift in my next post!
